Understanding the brain

Cognitive training and tutoring are not the same thing

If more tutoring keeps producing less than you expected, this is usually why.

Families often come to us after a year or two of tutoring that helped less than everyone hoped. The tutor was good, the child worked, and the gap did not close. It is worth explaining why that happens, because it is rarely anyone's fault.

Two different jobs

Tutoring teaches content. Fractions, comprehension, verb tenses. It fills the gap between what a child has been taught and what they have absorbed. When a child missed a term, moved schools, or hit one topic badly, tutoring is exactly right.

Cognitive training works on the equipment. Attention, working memory, processing speed, flexibility. It does not teach fractions. It works on the capacity to take in and hold on to material like fractions.

A rough analogy

Think of a leaking bucket. Tutoring pours more water in. If the bucket holds water, that works and the level rises. If the bucket is leaking, you can pour all year and the level barely moves, and everyone concludes the child is not trying.

Cognitive training works on the bucket. It is slower to show up in a test score and it changes what every future hour of teaching is worth.

How to tell which one you need

It is probably a content gap if the difficulty is in one or two subjects, there was an identifiable disruption, your child follows and retains material in areas they enjoy, and progress is steady once someone explains it.

It is more likely to be a skills issue if the difficulty spans most subjects, the same material has been retaught several times, your child understands in the session and has lost it by the next one, instructions have to be broken down repeatedly, and homework takes far longer than it should for the amount of work involved.

Most children who are stuck need both

This is not a choice between the two. A child with genuine skill gaps also has real content gaps by now, because they have been sitting in lessons that were not landing.

Working on the underlying skills while also closing the content gap is what changes the picture. That is why Wave Rx and Wave Academy are separate departments that regularly run alongside each other, planned by the same team.

What cognitive training involves

It starts with assessment, because training a skill that is already strong is wasted time. From there it is structured, one-to-one, and progressively harder, working the target skills directly. Sessions are intensive by design, and progress is measured against the starting point rather than described in general terms.

A reasonable expectation

Be wary of anyone promising a specific jump in a specific number of weeks. What you should expect is a clear starting assessment, goals written down before you commit, and measurement against them.

If tutoring has not delivered what you expected, a free consultation is a sensible place to work out why.
