Why your child knows something one day and forgets it the next

This is the single most common thing parents say to us. There is a reason for it.

You sat with them. They got every one right. Four days later it has gone, and you are wondering whether the whole evening was imaginary.

This is probably the most common thing parents describe to us, and it is worth saying clearly: it is very rarely about effort, and it is very rarely about intelligence.

Knowing it once is not the same as owning it

There is a real difference between information that has been held briefly and information that has been stored. On Thursday night the word was in working memory, propped up by you sitting next to them, by the list being in front of them, and by having just seen it. Take those props away and there may be nothing underneath.

Storing something properly needs it to be encoded, consolidated and then retrievable without the original context. Any one of those three can be the weak link, and they need different responses.

The usual weak links

Attention at the moment of learning. If attention drifted during the input, the information never arrived cleanly. It cannot be retrieved because it was never properly stored.

Working memory capacity. If holding four things at once is at the limit, the fifth pushes one out. Long instructions and multi-step problems collapse for this reason.

Processing speed. If it takes longer to take information in, the lesson moves on before it has landed. The child is still on step two when the class is at step four.

Retrieval, rather than storage. Sometimes it is in there and cannot be found on demand. You see this when a child fails a test and then answers correctly in the car home.

Sleep and load. Consolidation largely happens during sleep. A short night after a heavy day does measurable damage to what was learned.

What tends not to work

More of the same. If a child forgot after four repetitions, an eighth repetition of the same kind on the same evening mostly produces a tired child and a worse association with the subject. Re-reading in particular feels productive and is one of the weakest ways to build durable memory.

What tends to work

Spacing. Three short sessions across a week beat one long session, by a distance. The forgetting between sessions is doing useful work.

Retrieval practice. Ask them to produce the answer from memory before showing it. Closing the book and writing what they remember is harder than re-reading and far more effective.

Interleaving. Mixing problem types in one session, rather than doing twenty of the same, makes it stick better even though it feels worse at the time.

Tie it to something. Isolated facts are fragile. A fact connected to something already known has more than one route back to it.

When it is worth looking deeper

Study technique fixes a lot of this. If you have changed how you revise and the pattern is still there across subjects, across terms, and in things your child cares about, then it is worth looking at the underlying skills directly.
